SP200/204/205/206/207/208/211/213 +5v high-speed rs232 transceivers ? copyright 2000 sipex corporation 6 attain symmetrical 10v power supplies. figure 3a shows the waveform found on the positive side of capcitor c 2 , and figure 3b shows the negative side of capcitor c 2 . there is a freeCrunning oscillator that controls the four phases of the voltage shifting. a description of each phase follows. phase 1 v ss charge storage during this phase of the clock cycle, the positive side of capacitors c 1 and c 2 are initially charged to +5v. c l + is then switched to ground and the charge in c 1 C is transferred to c 2 C . since c 2 + is connected to +5v, the voltage potential across capacitor c 2 is now 10v. phase 2 v ss transfer phase two of the clock con- nects the negative terminal of c 2 to the v ss storage capacitor and the positive terminal of c 2 to ground, and transfers the generated Cl0v to c 3 . simultaneously, the positive side of capaci- tor c 1 is switched to +5v and the negative side is connected to ground. phase 3 v dd charge storage the third phase of the clock is identical to the first phase the charge transferred in c 1 produces C5v in the negative terminal of c 1 , which is applied to the negative side of capacitor c 2 . since c 2 + is at +5v, the voltage potential across c 2 is l0v. phase 4 v dd transfer the fourth phase of the clock connects the negative terminal of c 2 to ground, and transfers the generated l0v across c 2 to c 4 , the v dd storage capacitor. again, simultaneously with this, the positive side of capacitor c 1 is switched to +5v and the negative side is con- nected to ground, and the cycle begins again. since both v + and v C are separately generated from v cc ; in a noCload condition v + and v C will be symmetrical. older charge pump approaches that generate v C from v + will show a decrease in the magnitude of v C compared to v + due to the inherent inefficiencies in the design. the clock rate for the charge pump typically operates at 15khz. the external capacitors can be as low as 0.1 m f with a 16v breakdown voltage rating. the SP200 series devices are made up of three basic circuit blocks 1) transmitter/driver, 2) receiver and 3) the sipex proprietary charge v cc = +5v ?v ?v +5v v ss storage capacitor v dd storage capacitor c 1 c 2 c 3 c 4 + + ++ figure 1. charge pump phase 1 figure 2. charge pump phase 2 v cc = +5v ?0v v ss storage capacitor v dd storage capacitor c 1 c 2 c 3 c 4 + + ++
7 SP200/204/205/206/207/208/211/213 +5v high-speed rs232 transceivers ? copyright 2000 sipex corporation figure 3. charge pump waveforms +10v a) c 2 + gnd gnd b) c 2 C C10v pump. each model within the series incorpo- rates variations of these circuits to achieve the desired configuration and performance. transmitter/driver the drivers are inverting transmitters, which ac- cept either ttl or cmos inputs and output the rs-232 signals with an inverted sense relative to the input logic levels. typically, the rs-232 out- put voltage swing is 9v with no load, and 5v minimum with full load. the transmitter outputs are protected against infinite shortCcircuits to ground without degradation in reliability. the drivers of the SP200 , sp205 , sp205b , sp206 , sp206b , sp207b, sp211 , sp211b and sp213 can be triCstated by using the shutdown function. in the power off state, the output impedance will remain greater than 300 ohms, again satisfying the rs-232 specifications. should the input of the driver be left open, an internal 400kohm pullup resistor to v cc forces the input high, thus commit- ting the output to a low state. the slew rate of the transmitter output is internally limited to a maxi- mum of 30v/ m s in order to meet the eia standards (eia rs-232d 2.1.7, paragraph 5). the transition of the loaded output from high to low also meets the monotonicity requirements of the standard. receivers the receivers convert rs-232 input signals to inverted ttl signals. since the input is usually from a transmission line where long cable lengths and system interference can degrade the signal, the inputs have a typical hysteresis margin of 500mv. this ensures that the receiver is virtu- ally immune to noisy transmission lines. should an input be left unconnected, a 5kohm pulldown resistor to ground will commit the output of the receiver to a high state. figure 4. charge pump phase 3 v cc = +5v ?v +5v ?v v ss storage capacitor v dd storage capacitor c 1 c 2 c 3 c 4 + + ++
